What Impact Will DOMA Ruling Have in Texas

The Supreme Court knocked down part of the Defense of Marriage Act with their ruling on Wednesday, but as far as changes to marriage laws here in Texas, not much changes right now.

The ruling allows same sex couples living here who were married in another states to get federal benefits but Jonathan Saenz of Texas Values told Matt Patrick that is about the only immediate change we’ll see here.

“It left in place that states have the right to define marriage as they see fit. For Texas, the marriage laws are unchanged for now,” Saenz said.

But even though that’s the case, Saenz feels you can expect more legal fights to come over the issue.

“These decisions should serve as a wakeup call to Texans. Even though we can still define marriage as one man, one woman the battle on this issue is going to continue,” Saenz explained.

Texas views marriage as one man, one woman in a Constitutional Amendment that passed in 2005. But Brooke Seals told KTRH she is hopeful that will change one day soon.

“I just feel that that is a possibility. I just cross my fingers and hope we are picking up momentum and it’s only going to get better,” Seals said. “It can be done. There is a big presence here in Texas.
