The Kinkster Carries the Hopes of Texas Democrats

He may not be the Democrat they wished for but he may be the only Democrat that could win.

Texas comedian, musician, and Governor of the Heart of Texas Kinky Friedman could be the best chance a Democrat has at winning a statewide office in November.  Friedman is running for Texas Agriculture Commissioner and faces fellow Democrat Jim Hogan in May's run-off elections.

Friedman says he can give Republicans who are fed-up with establishment conservatives a reason to vote, "I think they relate to the old fashioned, old-time Harry Truman blue dog Democrat.  The old-time Democrats."

As Ag Commissioner Friedman says he wants to help drought stricken farmers by allowing them to grow industrial hemp, "The number one hemp-producing country in the world is China.  And can you guess who their number one customer is? It's the U.S., of course it's the U.S."

In the latest farm bill passed by Washington they authorized a pilot program for five states to start growing industrial hemp.  Texas was not one of them.  Hemp requires much less water and does not require pesticides.  Comparatively hemp needs half of the water that cotton does.

Friedman says that he was once showed a poll by former Houston Mayor Bill White that showed Friedman polled equally with both Republicans and Democrats.  Which means if he can get passed a primary he would have a good shot in a general election.
