Preseason Finale Should Decide Texans Backup QB

Preseason Finale Should Decide Texans Backup QB

When the Texans and Cowboys square off in the final preseason game Thursday night in Dallas, don't expect to see any super stars on either side of the field.

The match up instead will decide who makes the final cut, and maybe more importantly who quarterback Matt Schaub's backup will be.

Sports Talk 790's Adam Clanton likes former University of Houston Cougar Case Keenum, but admits Coach Gary Kubiak tends to favor experience.

“I just don't see him changing his mind about TJ Yates being the number two guy, but I do see them carrying three quarterbacks,” Clanton tells KTRH News.

Several others are trying to survive Friday's final cut.

“Corner back Brandon Harris is a guy you got to keep an eye on, he had some bone-headed moments in the last preseason game,” says Clanton.  “Safety Shiloh Keo, I don't think he'll go away because Kubiak has these guys that he likes.”

“You wonder about linebacker Travardo Williams, he was a fourth-round pick, but guys like Willie Jefferson, who was an undrafted free agent out of Stephen F. Austin, have looked better than him,” he says.

Though none of the starters are expected to play, the in-state rivalry still offers pro football bragging rights in Texas.

“Would you rather Arian Foster, J.J. Watt, etc, play in the game and get hurt when it doesn't mean anything?” Clanton asked.
