Plans for New National Park Find Resistance

Texas Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson of Dallas is one of two sponsors of a bill which would establish a new national park – on the moon.

The Apollo Lunar Landing Legacy Act would put a national historical park there to ensure the American landing sites are preserved for the future.  Not everybody thinks it’s a good idea.

“Power to the people who want to go do that with their own money and their own times,” says Keith Cowing, editor of nasawatch.com.  “But, I think that it’s symptomatic of the sickness in D.C. where they just focus on these self-congratulatory efforts that really mean nothing.”

Cowing says he wishes equal time and money would be spending on restoring the funding taken away from NASA.

He questions whether a national park could even be established on land not claimed for the United States.  “You actually have to go against more than a half-century of U.S. policy where we don’t claim sovereign rights on any body that we land on,” Cowing explains, saying, “We never have.  I mean, the flag was put there to say, yeah, we were here, but no claim was ever made.”
