NRA Convention Comes To Houston

The NRA Convention is getting underway, and gun enthusiasts of all kinds will gather at the Brown Convention Center.

One of those enthusiasts is Natalie Foster, the creator of Girls Guide to Guns. She told Matt Patrick shooting helps with self esteem.

“It’s a passion of mine. I really enjoy it. I feel so confident and empowered by it. I encourage all women to go out and give it a try,” Foster said.

Foster says for her, it wasn't just protection. It was about family.

“It was connecting with my father. That just brought about a much deeper relationship with him,” Foster explained.

The convention runs through Sunday. Among the featured speakers will include Governor Rick Perry and Senator Ted Cruz. And you don't have to be a long time gun owner to get involved. Gun Talk Radio Host Tom Gresham says there's a growing trend of new gun owners out there.

“About one-third of the people buying a gun today are first time gun buyers. And many of those buyers are in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and even 70’s,” Gresham explained.

Foster is planning to share her stories with other women at the convention this weekend. There will be many exhibits to visit. And Gresham says, there will be plenty of political talk as well.

“Gun owners are more informed, more aware and now they are getting plugged in. That’s what just happened in the Senate,” Gresham said.

There will be some protesters as well. Erica Lafferty, whose mother was killed in the Sandy Hook shootings, is in Houston and says he wants to talk with NRA officials about gun laws.
