New Laws Lead to More Abortion Clinics Closing

New regulations are making it too expensive for many abortion clinics to stay open.  They include health standards which ramp up the overhead.  The changes have resulted in hundreds of abortion clinic closing nationwide.  Some estimates put it at 10 percent or more.

Texas Right to Life Director Elizabeth Graham says the changes passed by the Texas Legislature are having an impact.  “Increased health and safety standards at abortion clinics will minimize the casualties for pregnant women,” Graham points out, adding, “Sadly, maybe not for the unborn children.

It’s hard to get current numbers, but an estimated 80 thousand abortions were performed in Texas in 2010.  A year later, that number was 74 thousand.

“Overall,” she says, “there is a decline because of the expansion of the organizations and agencies which do provide free services to women facing unplanned pregnancies.”
