Kubiak Speaks On Texans Issues

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak had a series of issues to address at his news conference Monday, coming off the team's fifth consecutive loss on Sunday against Kansas City.  First up, Kubiak addressed the team's decision to release three rookie players. The team didn't give a reason for releasing running back Cierre Wood, defenseive end Sam Montgomery and outside linebacker Willie Jefferson, but a source said it was for a violation of team rules at their Kansas City hotel last weekend.  "I won't discuss team rules and those types of things, but I make decisions based on a body of work in everything I do," Kubiak said.

The other big issue was the quarterback situation.  While acknowledging that undrafted rookie Case Keenum played well on Sunday, Kubiak declined to announce any official change at quarterback.  "Matt's our starting quarterback," he said.  "Case played this week because Matt wasn't healthy, and Case went in and played extremely well."  However, Kubiak did not make any definitive predictions beyond that.  "I'm gonna sit down during our bye week and evaluate where we're at as a team, and move forward from there."  That answer may not sit well with Houston fans, many of whom want to see Keenum take over.  "(Keenum) had a good game for it to be his first start," says Sportstalk 790 host and former NFL player N.D. Kalu.  "I feel like he played better than Matt Schaub has played this season."

Perhaps the most devastating news for the Texans this week is the season-ending knee injury to linebacker Brian Cushing.  It's the second straight season Cushing's season has been cut short by a knee injury.  "After what he's been through, to make his way back and play the way he was playing, I think he was playing at a defensive player of the year type level," says Kubiak.  "And then here he goes again, he's gotta go through this."   Cushing is staying positive and plans to be back next year, but it's just the latest blow in a season that appears to be unraveling for the Texans.  "This was a Super Bowl or bust type season," says Kalu.  "Somebody's gotta get in that locker room and get them excited about playing football again."
