HPD Officer Victim Of Overnight Home Invasion

Harris County Sheriff's investigators say the Houston police officer had just gotten home late Thursday night when all of the sudden he heard someone banging on his front door.

Detectives say the person at the door was screaming 'police, police'.

"At that point they [suspects] kicked in the front door. The homeowner then engaged them at that time," HCSO spokesman, Thomas Gilliland KTRH television partner KPRC Local 2.

Investigators say the officer was shot in the upper leg one time but was able to fire back. The officer thinks he shot one of the two suspects before they got away.

Neighbors who live in the Coles Crossing subdivision were very shaken up about all the police in the area.

"There has never been anything like this in this neighborhood for fifteen years or so. I walked outside and was surprised to see all the police activity and police tape," one neighbor explained.

The officer was rushed to Memorial Hermann and expected to make a full recovery.

Meanwhile, detectives have been checking area hospitals for anyone who has come in overnight with reported gun shot wounds as they continue to search for the two suspects.
