Houston Ranks 41st in Bible-Minded Cities

The American Bible Society looks at the 96 most populous cities in the U.S. and conducts more than 46-thousand interviews to gauge how Bible-minded the residents are. They define Bible-minded as reading the Bible during a typical week, and strongly asserting that he Bible is accurate in the principles it teachers.

“What we’ve done over the past two years is take the top 100 cities by population size, and take a hard look at two things: one, have people read the Bible in the past seven days, if they’re reading the Bible outside of their church, synagogue or whatever their normal religious practice is; and at the same time find out what their perceptions of the Bible are. Do they feel that it’s accurate, literally giving respondents the opportunity to tell us they agree strongly or they totally disagree?” says Arthur Satterwhite, Sr. Program Manager of the American Bible Society.”

Dallas/Ft. Worth is the highest rated city in Texas, where 39% of residents are regarded as Bible-minded with a rank of #22 in the country. San Antonio comes in second in the state with 36%, ranked #34 in the nation. Houston is third in Texas with 31% and is ranked 41st in the U.S.. Austin rates a 29% and is ranked #48.

Interestingly, all of the top ten cities are in the South. “The Bible-belt has always been very strong,” Satterwhite tells KTRH News. “It continues to be that. But as you look across the South not all of the states are in the top 10 or even in the top 25.”
