Local voters will decide the race for Houston mayor, city council, local school boards and future of the Astrodome.
“I think what's getting people to the polls in rates higher than we've seen in two mayoral elections is the vigorous campaigns, and not just at the top of the ticket,” says sociology professor Bob Stein at Rice University.
Still, the real driving force says Stein, has been Mayor Annise Parker's re-election campaign.
“She put a big emphasis not only on campaigning rather early, and getting voters to vote early, but that drags a lot of voters to other races that are on the ballot,” he tells KTRH News.
Several statewide issues are on the ballot as well, including one that would use Rainy Day money to start a water projects fund.
“Thirty percent of the vote statewide that will be cast on this issue, Proposition 6, and the nine others will come from Harris County,” says Stein.
All 775 polling sites in Harris County will be open seven until seven.
