Houston Gangs Extend Turf To Suburbs

Law enforcement officials say that as gang members in Houston extend their turf to surrounding suburbs, officials in those areas are developing their own strategies for countering them.

Texas' public safety director, Steven McCraw, has warned that ``gang violence and crime are a chief threat to public safety in Texas.'' A state report this year found that gang membership across Texas may exceed 100,000 individuals, with a high concentration in the Houston area.

Authorities say the Houston-area gangs are migrating to the suburbs because they think they won't be recognized there. Detective Jennifer Kiser, Fort Bend County's gang expert says Houston and Harris County have the tactical experience and resources to aggressively combat the gangs, driving them into the suburbs.
