Houston Enjoys Low Gas Prices – For Now

While national gas prices are expected to drop another 20 cents by Christmas, regular unleaded gasoline in southeast Texas is already 37 cents cheaper than it was at this time last year.

The low prices may not last.  AAA-Texas Senior Public Affairs Specialist Doug Shupe isn’t predicting that, but he says there are some factors to consider.

“As we get closer to Thanksgiving,” Shupe explains, “the demand for fuel is going to rise, so the prices at the retail level could go up as well.”

The average price in Texas is $3.11 per gallon, but it's $3.06 in Houston.  That compares to $3.43 at this time last year.

“There haven't been any major refinery disruptions,” he says, “or disruptions to the production, so that's why we're seeing the lower prices compared to one year ago.”
