Heroin Use Growing in Houston

Houston Police crackdowns on prescription drug abuse have pushed some users toward heroin, but it's still mostly an inner-city problem in Houston.  National studies suggest it's moved to the suburbs.

Houston Senior Police Officer Robert Bradley says he's seeing the movement, but middle-class suburban whites still aren't the majority.

“We are seeing more, younger white folks, coming in from Kingwood, The Woodlands, Montgomery County, into some of the areas that we do work, quite often,” Bradley says.  “We're just not seeing the numbers.”

Heroin as the drug-of-choice is growing.

“In the last few years,” he says, “there has been an uptick as far as what we're seeing as far as seizures.”

National reports suggest the new face of the heroin user is a middle-class, white person in their 20s, living in the suburbs.
