Health Officials Urge You to Get Vaccinated for MMR

Doctors at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say reports of measles are up this year, emphasizing the need for vaccinations.  The numbers are still well below the major outbreak recorded in 1989.  Nonetheless, the upward trend has the CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat saying protection against measles, mumps and rubella needs to be pushed above the current 90 percent level.

“It's a far cry from that crisis that we had 24 years ago,” says Dr. Schuchat, “but with measles things can change very quickly and we need to stay ahead of this virus.”

Three states are leading the way.  “There have been three outbreaks that account for most of this year's cases,” she says, “in New York, North Carolina and Texas.”

In more than 80 percent of the Texas cases, the victim hadn't had the MMR vaccine.
