Houston kids will have a chance to meet and play with real football heroes and actual NFL cheerleaders at Saturday’s Gridiron Classic, sponsored by Reliant. It’s open to children ages 8-17. Activities will include youth football and cheerleading camps, celebrity player meet-and-greets, a health fair and a celebrity flag-football game.
“We’ll have 21 current and former NFL players at Reagan High this Saturday,” Reliant Chief Marketing Officer Karen Jones told KTRH. “This came through our relationship with the Texans and we met up with [Gridiron Classic founder and former Miami Dolphin] Alphonso Roundtree and he’s a character and a half, a guy you just can’t resist, and a cause that was outstanding.” She says the pro-football players will be teaching kids skills, drills, ethics and teamwork.
Alphonso Roundtree says he got the idea looking back on his own childhood, when there were no opportunities to meet actual professional football players. He says participants and their families will be able to watch the current and former NFL stars engage in a game of flag-football.
The Gridiron Classic will be held at John H. Reagan High School, 413 E. 13th St. in Houston, 77008. On-site registration begins at 8am Saturday.
