Texas House is approving a bill banning abortion after 20 weeks.
State representatives signed off on House Bill 2 today, which also enacts new regulations on abortion clinics and gives abortion doctors access to hospital emergency departments. Women can still have an abortion after five months if the doctor rules her life is in danger or there's severe fetal abnormalities.
The bill now heads to the state Senate where a public hearing is scheduled for tomorrow.
Governor Rick Perry issued the following statement:
"The tremendous outpouring of support for this legislation has demonstrated how Texas stands for life, and I commend everyone who wore blue, turned out and spoke up in support of life in our state. Now is not the time to waver, however, as the Senate continues its important work in support of women's health and protecting the lives of our most vulnerable Texans."
