Entertainers and Politicians Buy 'Friends' on Social Media

So you don't have enough friends. Did you know you can buy them? They're pretty cheap on Twitter and Facebook -- but beware, they're not human.

Politicians and pop stars seem to be the most aggressive at getting these phony friends -- which are really bots that exist only on computers -- often in Asia and Eastern Europe.

"People were trying to influence Twitter and some of the other social media with these bots which aren't really real people but give the appearance there are a lot of people behind a trend or a behind a candidate or a cause."

Houston family therapist Julie Nise says parents should be aware a desperate teen could try to make him or herself appear more popular by purchasing such 'friends.'

"No matter how you slice it this is just really a creepy way of manipulating the Internet for gains and purposes that just are not very good."
