The FDA Department of Veterinary Medicine has issued another warning about the dangers of Chinese manufactured dog Jerky treats. Martine Hartogensis, Deputy Director of the Office of Surveillance and Compliance at the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine, says they’ve had this on their radar since 2007 and while much of the product has been removed after a major recall there is still some available on the market and dogs continue to get sick, and in some cases even die.
3,600 dogs have been affected since it began, and almost 600 have died.
Dep. Dir. Hartogensis says symptoms generally appear shortly after eating the Jerky treats, and include lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, an increase in the amount of fluids consumed and an increase in urination. In severe cases it could lead to kidney failure.
The Jerky comes in a variety of flavors. All of them are dangerous. The one thing they have in common is that they are all made in China.
