Critics Go Nuclear Over Radioactive Waste Bill

While most states cower in fear at the thought of taking in radioactive waste, Texas says bring it on! But critics say it's an obviously risky idea and a blatant example of crony Capitalism.

An Amarillo state senator has authored a bill to allow three dozen states to dump nuclear waste in a west Texas county.

"It potentially could affect not only health and safety but the aquifers nearby."

Tom Smith of watchdog group Public Citizen says the legislation benefits the Dallas billionaire who owns Waste Control Specialists.

"What this bill does, ultimately, is make more money for one man, Harold Simmons out of Dallas."

KTRH was unable reach the bill's author, Senator Kel Seliger. Seliger says his bill won't change the amount of waste allowed, but it'll allow a different kind of waste. He says it's safe.
