Some researchers in Canada want you to put down that glass of prune juice, because it is making you age faster.
The claim comes from a research group at McGill University after they tested worms with antioxidants. The original theory behind the benefits of antioxidants stems from the belief that by-products of oxygen being burned in our bodies can cause damage to our cells.
This is where the antioxidants come in. They block those by-products from building up in our system and causing damage.
The researchers in Canada say they found that the by-products or "free radicals" actually strengthen our cells. They injected worms with similar nervous system functions to humans, with free radicals and found they lived longer.
Others say we shouldn't be put off antioxidant supplements quite yet, saying since the experiments are essentially test tube experiments, and are not exactly directly applicable to humans.
