Brain-Dead Woman Removed from Life Support

Brain-Dead Woman Removed from Life Support

A Fort Worth hospital has ended its life-sustaining treatment of a pregnant, brain-dead woman in accordance with a judge’s order.

Hospital officials pulled took 33-year old Marlise Munoz off a ventilator this morning.

Attorneys for the Munoz family released a statement saying, “The Munoz and Machado families will now proceed with the somber task of laying Marlise Munoz's body to rest, and grieving over the great loss that has been suffered. May Marlise Munoz finally rest in peace, and her family find the strength to complete what has been an unbearably long and arduous journey."

Court documents show Munoz has met the legal criteria for brain death since November 28th. The hospital continued life-support, however, citing a Texas law that requires ongoing treatment for pregnant women.

The two sides finally agreed that the fetus inside her is not viable, due to an unknown period of oxygen deprivation. That cleared the way for the judge to issue Friday’s decision.
