Boy Scout Units Disbanding Over Gay Ruling

Boy Scout Units Disbanding Over Gay Ruling

A local Cub Scout pack has joined other Boy Scout troops in disbanding because they have to allow gays.

Conroe Cub Scout Pack 1855 Leader Mike Davis sent a letter to parents telling them the pack will not be renewing its charter in December because the Boy Scouts of America removed its ban on gay scouts.

Lynda Sanders with the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America says the choice is up to the individual troops, "It is something that they are individually deciding to do, although most religions and most church doctrines are on board with the way the policy currently stands."

Sanders says since the ruling to allow gay scouts, 12 out of the over 1,700 Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout packs have decided to disband rather than allow gays.  That affects 236 members out of over 50,000.

The Sam Houston Area Council says they will assist those affected by the disbandings to find new troops and packs if they wish.
