Houston's Armed Citizen Project is using the Labor Day weekend to train and arm another 50 local women with a free 12-gauge shotgun.

Organizer Kyle Coplen says this Sunday's event at Shiloh Shooting in Northwest Houston still has openings, applications are available on the group's website.

“We're looking for single women, single mothers, folks that may have some type of disability, have a low sense of security in their home and who don't already have a firearm,” Coplen tells KTRH News.

Houston college student Erin Daniels was the first woman trained under the Armed Citizen Project.  She encourages other women to take the course.

“Having that ability to say I personally feel like I can defend myself, and as a woman I can't really be messed with, I think its very empowering,” says Daniels.

“I don't think many of us feel that way often, when living by ourselves,” she says.

The group also is busy planning a nationwide effort to train and arm 500 women sometime next month.
